MORE PHOTOS FROM CHARTER SCHOOL ADVOCACY DAY

February 9, 2011 at 2:02 pm | Posted in Events, Parents/Parent Team | Leave a comment

GREAT PUBLIC SCHOOLS! Assembled in an Albany convention hall on Charter School Advocacy Day, charter school parents and supporters held up banners reading, “Great PUBLIC schools.”

WE DO MORE WITH 30% LESS! Here, charter school parents, students and supporters pose with a check representing the 68,000,000 additional hours of instruction time New York charter schools provide to students, families and communities; yet we receive only 70% of the funding traditional public schools receive. The check was delivered to Governor Paterson’s office, to drive home the point.

SICCS PARENT WINS NYC CHARTER SCHOOLS POSTER CONTEST!

Ms. Constance Turrentine of Stapleton, whose son Christian is in kindergarten class K-200 at SICCS, won first prize in a poster contest sponsored by the NYC Charter School Center, to celebrate and publicize Charter School Advocacy Day, which was held on February 7 in Albany at the State Capitol.

Ms. Turrentine was joined on her trip to Albany by Ms. Lisa Diaz, mother of Kaitlin, who also attends the school.

In an e-mail written today to the entire SICCS community, Principal Pauline Frank — shown right, with contest winner Constance Turrentine — wrote:

“Constance Turrentine came by this morning and gave me the $500 check from the poster contest. The story was really exciting! When they got off the bus in Albany they all went into this room and Ms. Turrentine had just taken a seat when she heard over the loudspeaker:

‘Staten Island Community Charter School is in the house! We’ve been waiting for you!’

They then announced that her poster had won first prize in the contest. Wow!”

Wow! indeed. Ms. Turrentine’s prize-winning poster is now on display in the school office. We are all very proud and grateful for the hard work and dedication of our Parent Team, including Ms. Turrentine and Ms. Diaz. The $500 prize is a major boost to our fund-raising efforts and will be used to fund or supplement various school projects.

Charter School Advocacy Day — and the poster contest — were organized by the New York City Charter School Center (http://nyccharterschools.org), an organization representing the interests of charter schools and the students and communities we serve. The issues of greatest concern — and the reason advocacy is so important — are avoiding cuts to charter school funding . . . bringing real equity to the funding charter schools receive (we get only 70% of what traditional public schools receive) . . . and increasing the number of charter schools in New York City, to increase the educational options available to New York City students and families.
